And why we believe this allows us to provide more personalized, confidential, and effective care.

One of the most common questions we receive from prospective clients is:

“Do you accept insurance?”

The short answer is no.

The longer answer is a little more nuanced, and we believe it’s important to explain why we made that decision.

When people hear that a therapy practice does not accept insurance, they sometimes assume it’s simply a business decision. In reality, our choice was largely driven by clinical values and our desire to provide the highest quality care possible.

We understand that insurance can be incredibly valuable for many healthcare services. However, when it comes to mental health treatment, there are important tradeoffs that many people don’t realize exist.

We believe our clients deserve to understand those tradeoffs so they can make informed decisions about their care.

First, We Want to Be Clear About Something

We believe therapy should be accessible.

We do not believe people who use insurance are doing anything wrong.

We do not believe insurance is inherently bad.

In fact, many of our clients use insurance for medical care, psychiatric medications, hospital visits, and other healthcare needs.

Our decision simply reflects the type of mental health care we want to provide.

For us, it comes down to flexibility, privacy, and clinical freedom.

Insurance Requires a Mental Health Diagnosis

Many people are surprised to learn that insurance companies generally require a diagnosable mental health condition before they will pay for therapy.

In other words, therapy is often not covered simply because someone wants support navigating a difficult season of life.

Insurance typically requires a diagnosis such as:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Major Depressive Disorder
  • Panic Disorder
  • Other recognized mental health conditions

Sometimes those diagnoses are completely appropriate.

But sometimes people seek therapy because they are experiencing:

  • Stress
  • Burnout
  • Relationship challenges
  • Parenting difficulties
  • Life transitions
  • Personal growth goals
  • Career changes
  • Spiritual questions

Not every struggle is a disorder.

Not every difficult season requires a diagnosis.

We believe people should be able to seek support without being required to fit into a medical category.

We Want Treatment Decisions to Be Made by You and Your Therapist

When insurance pays for therapy, insurance companies often have a say in what they consider medically necessary.

This can affect:

  • The type of treatment being approved
  • The number of sessions covered
  • The frequency of sessions
  • Ongoing authorization requirements
  • Documentation requirements

While these policies are designed to manage healthcare costs, they do not always align with what is clinically ideal for a particular client.

At Serenity Wellness, we believe treatment decisions should primarily be made between the client and the clinician.

Not an insurance reviewer who has never met you.

This allows us to tailor care based on your needs rather than insurance guidelines.

Privacy Matters

Many clients are also surprised to learn that when insurance is used, certain information must be shared with the insurance company.

This often includes:

  • Your diagnosis
  • Treatment plans
  • Session documentation
  • Progress reports
  • Medical necessity reviews

Insurance companies require this information to justify payment for services.

For some clients, this is not a concern.

For others, maintaining greater privacy is important.

By remaining out-of-network, we are able to minimize the amount of personal information shared outside the therapeutic relationship.

For many people, that added level of confidentiality provides peace of mind.

We Can Focus on the Whole Person

One of the things that makes Serenity Wellness unique is our commitment to whole-person care.

Many of our clients are not simply looking to reduce symptoms.

They want to understand themselves more deeply.

They want to improve relationships.

They want to heal from trauma.

They want to become better parents.

They want to feel more connected to their lives.

They want to grow.

Some of the services we offer, such as:

  • Integrative wellness approaches
  • Personal growth and self-development work

are often difficult to fit into traditional insurance models.

Our private-pay structure allows us to focus on what is most helpful rather than what is most easily reimbursed.

We Believe Therapy Is an Investment in Your Life

We recognize that therapy is a financial investment.

We never want to minimize that reality.

At the same time, we often encourage people to think about therapy differently than they would a routine expense.

Effective therapy can impact nearly every area of life:

  • Relationships
  • Career performance
  • Physical health
  • Stress management
  • Confidence
  • Emotional wellbeing
  • Quality of life

The skills, insights, and healing that occur in therapy often continue benefiting people long after treatment ends.

For many clients, it becomes one of the most meaningful investments they make in themselves and their families.

We Do Help Clients Use Out-of-Network Benefits

Although we do not directly accept insurance, many clients are still able to receive partial reimbursement through their out-of-network benefits.

Upon request, we can provide a superbill that clients may submit to their insurance company.

Reimbursement amounts vary depending on the plan, so we encourage clients to contact their insurance provider directly to learn more about their out-of-network mental health benefits.

Our team is happy to help answer questions about this process.

Why Clients Often Choose Serenity

At the end of the day, most people do not choose Serenity because we don’t accept insurance.

They choose Serenity because of the care they receive.

They choose us because they want:

  • A therapist who feels like the right fit
  • Personalized treatment recommendations
  • Greater privacy
  • Flexible treatment options
  • Specialized services
  • Support for themselves, their child, their marriage, or their family

Most importantly, they choose us because they want meaningful change.

A Final Thought

We understand that every family has different financial realities, priorities, and healthcare needs.

For some people, using insurance makes perfect sense.

For others, the flexibility, privacy, and individualized care that comes with a private-pay practice feels like a better fit.

There is no right or wrong choice.

Our goal is simply to be transparent about why we have chosen the model we have and how that decision supports the type of care we strive to provide.

If you are considering therapy and wondering whether Serenity Wellness might be a good fit for you, we would be honored to answer your questions and help you explore your options.

Because finding the right support matters.

And sometimes the right support can change the course of a life.
